I've never created map tiles, either, but it seems to be an approach
used with game development for having a significantly larger
background than the screen supports. My assumption is that you would
implement an AdapterView-style recycling mechanism for swipes, but
that is a guess.
I suspect that if you do a little searching, you can find more
material on this subject.
