This is a good hint.

While my Authenticator.setDefault() is called just fine (no SecurityException) the
getPasswordAuthentication() is not being called as you suggest. I have not been able to track
down the reason for this yet. I have moved the setDefault() method to just before authentication should
take place, but with no luck.

So why could it be that getPasswordAuthentication() is not being called in my Android program,
while it works perfectly in my identical Java program running on Windows or Linux? Same URL/username/passwd.
