[android-developers] Re: Older stuff

You can flash newer firmware on older phones if the phone supports it.  You're probably not going to get an update pushed over the air, though, you'll probably have to find a copy of the firmware and flash it yourself.  Keep in mind that radio and bootloader firmwares will have to be updated, and those can be trickier than just a system firmware.

For reference, this is a good xda-developers thread for G1/Magic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668090.  I still have a Magic with GingerYoshi running on it (a 2.3 derivative)

And yes, as long as you match up your radios, bootloaders and system roms you can jump from, eg. 1.5 to 2.2.
