[android-developers] Re: application icons and other application graphics design

I recommend using a vector graphics program to do icons rather than Gimp. Then you have a lot of control over tweaking the image, and you can blow it up as much as you want, which you'll need for the 512x512 icon for Android Market and other app stores. And you might want to use pieces of your icon at high resolution for promo images.

I'm using Inkscape, which is free like Gimp.  If you Google search Inkscape tutorials, the first result is a blog with a bunch of tutorials that can get you started.

Sometimes, I start with an image that I draw with a tablet or on paper and scan in, but I use Inkscape's trace tool to convert it to vector format.
