I a sure it does require a lot of data, but as the OP described, all that data should have still been in cache. It is not at all clear why you believe "there is absolutely no way ... stored on a mobile device"; not when the user can see the map data for the whole route.

I think they did a great job of allowing you to use GPS once you've already gotten the route data with a data connection.  That is awesome...
