I a sure it does require a lot of data, but as the OP described, all that data should have still been in cache. It is not at all clear why you believe "there is absolutely no way ... stored on a mobile device"; not when the user can see the map data for the whole route.

In my mind there is nothing to fix... Do you have ANY idea how much data is required to calculate a route between two points?  There is absolutely NO way that much information could be put into the maps application and stored on a mobile device.

I think they did a great job of allowing you to use GPS once you've already gotten the route data with a data connection.  That is awesome...
