Acer has officially announced its next Android smartphone on Thursday, the Acer Stream.

The handset maker bills it as the "Perfect Entertainment Machine" and the Acer Stream certainly has the the hardware to back up that claim. It features include a 3.7-inch AMOLED display and a 5 megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD video. The inclusion of an HDMI output port makes watching videos on large screens a breeze and the 1GHz Snapdragon processor keeps things humming along.

While some of the Stream's features resemble those of the HTC Evo 4G and Droid Incredible, to differentiate itself from other companies, Acer has also customized the software and user experience for the Stream, which includes animations and a 3D interface. For instance, users grab the bottom left corner and "peel" it back in order to unlock the phone. A widget also sits on the lock screen, providing information without the need to open separate applications.

Other features include a History panel for toggling between frequently used apps and a choice of three different predictive keyboards. Like the Acer Liquid, the smartphone comes preloaded with such applications as Nemo player, Acer UrFooz, Facebook, Twidroid, and Spinlets.

Rounding out the phone are 512MB RAM, 2GB internal storage, a microSD card, and support for 3G+ HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.1, and Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n). As of right now the phone runs Android 2.1, but I expect support for 2.2 down the road.

Unfortunately, we don't know which carriers will be supporting the Acer Stream, though we suspect it will mostly like be an Asia-and-Europe-only device. Pricing information was also not released at this time.
