[id-android] WTI: Google corrects Steve Jobs; Android activation numbers don’t include upgrades

You probably didn't care to watch Apple's music event today. If you
missed it, long story short: new iPods, new iTunes, new Apple TV, and
a new shot at Android.

Jobs bragged at today's press event that iOS – iPhone, iPad, and iPod
Touch – activates 230,000 new devices each day. In an obvious dig at
Google, Jobs said "We think some of our friends are counting upgrades
in their numbers," referencing the 200,000 daily activations number
thrown around by Google.

Not so, says Fortune Mag. In response to a story on Apple's event, a
Google spokesperson told a Fortune writer that activation numbers are
completely new.

"The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in
fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we
only include devices that have Google services."

One million new Android phones are activated each work week, not just
folks switching from a Droid Eris to a Droid X. That's a big chunk.
