[android-developers] what is the purpose of getAuthToken() in chrome2phone example?

As far as I understand getAuthToken() token is used during
registration from android
to verify that user on appspot ( i think it's OAuth )
If I am developing and not using appspot gae server do I need to do
this?
Can I just skip calling getAuthToken() in android code?
