If you don't have access to the device, you could ask your friend to
email you /data/anr/traces.txt which automatically records ANRs as
they happen, including their stack traces.

The file is world-readable (although the parent directory is not).
There must be a way to get it even from a non-rooted device by using
one of the bazillion file manager apps available in Market.

If you do have access to the device, run the app from Eclipse in debug
mode, and when you get the ANR, use the debugger to pause the UI
thread, then check what it's doing.
