Not that rare, not that protected.

Not at all. In fact, a few of the people who worked on those apps show
up here, though not the person who I think did SpriteMethodTest.
My "back in the day" comment was that many of those samples are getting
on two years old, and I don't know if all of them have been kept up to
date. Your SpriteMethodTest one was updated in January, which is a good
sign.
I'd just post your questions here, with SpriteMethodTest in the subject
line, and hope for the best.
