I think that's incorrect usage of the notification area. It's for
showing status changes and allowing the user to respond to them. I
think you're trying to use it as a task bar. If every application did
this, the notfication area would get very cluttered.

This can be acheived with Android's multi-tasking feature. Just
long-touch the Home button and select a recent activity. That's much
more like a task bar, if that's what you're trying to acheive.
