For authentication, let your users log in.

Right now, if you have any sensitive data (personal user data or other sensitive data) or data that can lead to sensitive data, never ever use plain HTTP (remember when google needed to send out a patch quickly when Calendar and other Google apps sent out the auth-token over plain HTTP...). Your users will be thankful.
